Well, I have wasted so much time on this site this morning, that I figured I might as well just turn it into an actual article. Someone shot me a link for make-fortnite-skins.com, a new website that lets you create your own custom skins for Fortnite, using existing pieces of skins that are already present.

In short, this is what some fans have been asking for in the game for a while now, the ability to mix and match pieces of different skins to create new ones. That’s exactly what this offers, although no, there’s no way to port these skins into Fortnite itself, it’s just an art tool that’s fun to mess around with.

Above and below you can see some of the creations I’ve made so far. The site is still in a very early beta, so there are a bunch of issues with clipping, and you have to deselect the piece you just put on before putting anything else on, or else they’re start to stack with each other. It’s a little janky, but as you can see, you can still make some pretty cool stuff with it.

Would Epic ever consider putting anything like this in the game? I highly doubt it. When I first started playing Fortnite I was weirded out there wasn’t more skin customization, but I get that Epic wants to sell skins in full without mixing and matching which would create some…odd aesthetics, to say the least. As such, I really doubt we’ll see anything like this in the game, and the only mixing you’ll be able to do is select different pickaxes and back bling, but not arms, legs, heads and such. Still, given how cool some of these creations are, it does make you wish that you could run around with these custom skins in-game.

If I were Epic, I would never say never. I could see the potential in a monetization path where perhaps instead of mixing and matching all the current skins, you create a separate, custom pool of heads/arms/legs/chests/accessories that could go on a “blank” character and allow for deeper customization. You could kill two birds with one stone this way. You could still sell full skins most of the time, but also with a “custom” male and female character, you could sell bits and pieces for unique combinations that players could have a lot of fun experimenting with.

Still, with Epic raking in cash from the current system, I doubt they’re terribly motivated to change things up. The system as it stands is working just fine for them, and if anything like this did come to pass, it would likely be a long way out.

In the meantime, this is incredibly fun to play around with, and I guarantee you’ll lose at least 20 minutes on it if you go to the link. Enjoy.
