Manual For Teac Ag 790e

Ag For Life
First off I'll start by stating that I did not buy this amp for myself. I bought it for my grandparents who's mid 70's Heatkit finally died. I figured since I had it in my position for about a week 'why not check it out?'.The setup.. my review is probably going to be a bit different than most here. For one I am comparing it directly to my $1,000 MSRP late model Pioneer Elite integrated amp which I have paired with a custom HTPC (Athlon II X4, Asus 785G board, ect., ect.). The Pioneer has a built in Burr-Brown USB DAC which I did not use, I used on the onboard sound to level the playing field, and the onboard sound is actually pretty decent on this board. Speakers used were DIY solid cherry TriTrix MT monitors; these are considered a budget design but probably equivalent to speakers in the $500+ retail range.
For music I tried to get a variety of stuff in, I used Fiona Apple, Philip Glass, Spoon, and Massive Attack, about an hours worth on each amp, I believe I started off with the TEAC. Everything was played off my HTPC from Lame extreme preset (VBR0) encoded MP3 files, I haven't made the switch to lossless yet.
Audio reviews are n Now to the amp. I'll start with the sound since that's by far the most important factor and this amp dose not disappoint at all. The sound is very neutral and very pleasant to the ears, I found no need to change the tone controls. It is also remarkably quiet and there is very good stereo separation. Soundstage and imaging is also pretty impressive, sounds come from exactly where they should and nothing blended together, it wasn't as dynamic and engaging as my Pioneer but closer than I thought it would be. Also impressive how all this held up even under louder levels, I didn't max it out but probably 75%, the TriTrix are low xmax so they can't handle a ton anyway. Overall in comparison to the much more expensive Pioneer the TEAC isn't as detailed in all regards. The highs don't sounds quiet as transparent (airy perhaps?) and a bit rolled off. The mid-range doesn't have the same depth of presentation vocals sounded slightly recess and a bit less lifelike (Fiona Apple), and the guitar had a bit less bite (Spoon). The bass is missing a bit of lower octave presence and control mostly noticed in Philip Glass. Basically, it just sounds a bit flatter and slightly less dynamic, but it is a smooth and engaging sound. It's a surprisingly good sounding amp for this price range, with no glaring faults.
Build quality is pretty nice. The first thing I noticed is that it has very nice metal feet that look very similar to what is on my Pioneer. The back connections are of good quality, plastic but very nice biding posts that take and securely hold banana connectors, RCA connectors have snug and solid feel to them. Nothing is gold plated but I wasn't expecting anything to be. The front is very clean and nice feeling but but almost everything is button and not a physical switch or knob. This is undoubtedly done as cost cutting measure but everything seemed to work well enough, I didn't have any issues with the volume control that others have mentioned. Probably the biggest issue I could foresee is there is no physical buttons for the radio presets, though to be fare I didn't actually get far enough to see how the presets actually function. There is also two set of speaker outputs and you can drive both pairs at the same time would come in handy for setting up 2nd room with sound.
Bottom line this is a fantastic sounding amp for the price of entry. If you have a limited budget to get a system started this would be a great amp to start with allowing you spend more of your budget where it will do the most good, your speakers and 2ndly your source. I can easily see this amp driving speakers worth $500 or more, super cheap speakers (sub $150) would be doing this amp a great disservice.
