  • How I love you Rfactor2. Now all we need is a JNS track pack and life can be good

      • XXVIIRACING

It was a huge oval track pack for RF1 and was used in a lot of leagues.

      • Dwayne

You mean you need the HOP track pack and then everything will be good.

  • Depco

It is about time a decent NASCAR vehicle is introduced in rFactor 2. While I am not a huge NASCAR fan. I am more familiar with it and welcome a change from all the open wheel and GT class vehicles. It will attract a broader base in America where NASCAR is king for racing.

  • Yeah! Can’t wait!

P.S.: I laughed at the mash-up. Kinda like the real car facelifts that happen here in Brazil! lol

  • Should have been called a Fordelet FuSS.

Also, am I the only one that finds calling it a “Gen 6” strange? It makes sense with a licensed car, but well, obviously isnt licensed.

    • But, it is the 6th generation cup car… No matter if you look at it being licensed or not.

      • But it’s not, because there weren’t 5 generations proceeding it. 🙂

There was just the one that ISI released with rF1, then we would assume a CoT style one, and now this. So this is really a Gen3 NSCR (think that is what the series was in rF1) car!

      • They counted each iteration of the COT as a generation as well. So, yes… there are 6 generations.

      • But within rFactor’s world, there was nothing before the 2006 car they had, the first generation of stock car in rFactor-land.

      • I’m not sure if you understand what they’re doing… Calling it Gen-6 keeps it the real name while circumventing the licensing to call it Sprint Cup.

      • You’re both miscommunicating :p.

Yes, it’s called Gen-6 to show it’s based on current Nascar. But there’s no license or any previous history from the game to indicate prior history so if it’s to follow ISI gens, it’d be as Matt said.

  • Chris Wright

This is of course very welcome, but am I the only one left with the feeling that the constant stream of new content is less important than the refinement of what’s already been created?

That said, the world has been crying out for a decent Nascar single player sim for over a decade, so maybe this will be the feature to turn the tide in ISI’s favor. Certainly hope there’s more painting support for this than for the DW12…

    • The fact is(if we consider almost all other titles) they do not need many refinement as they do it almost right in the first place, considering the platform ability and development progress available till time of release. They simply do some things better than others, who only start scratching sim world lately. Bigger resources mean something(it helps), but you can not overcome years of experience and knowledge just like that.

    • In this case it can actually work towards a refinement of we already got. Since the tire behaviour on these cars is very specific and will definitely improve for others (such as DW12 tire issues on Indy).

  • Howson? Do you mean Howston? If that’s the case, I’d sure love to see more “updated” cars that were included in the original rFactor (Even though the Howston was really a GT car similar in looks to a Supra)… Sure, a lot of people over the years probably could care less about them, but in the early “Beta” days, they were all that could be had until the modding scene picked up. Personally, I would love to see what ISI’s modern take on the Kodi ZR would be. I think I spent more time in that little car (with max upgrades, of course!) than any of the other rFactor standard fleet cars. Personally, that car reminded me a lot of the Acura RSX of the era.It would be neat to see an updated Kodi go up against the Civic!

  • Frankly at this point it is clear, to me at least, that the modding community has decided to mostly take a wait and see stance. This means that very few actual original mods are being made for rF2. Most are conversions from rF1 and other gMotor 2 engine based games.

While I understand the complexity and time that goes into a new mod, this lack of support from the racing community really presents itself when the other competition is rolling out car after car after car.

This all certainly indicates to me that ISI is going to have to buckle down and create more in house cars and tracks to remain competitive to all but the most loyal rF2 fans. Too bad because it is a phenomenal game which is being eclipsed by pCars and AC in the media and and on sim racing sites.

    • Fine by me. With all respect, “ISI quality” mods represent about 10% of all mods, the rest just don’t add any value because of lack of quality(most conversion). If this mean ISI need put out for example 20% more own made content, it will be a lot better, at least for me.

    • There were very little original mods for rf1 as well. Most are converted, even some of the really good ones.

      • I was coming here to say exactly that!

Everyday I read things like “there’s not many mods for rF2 as there were for rF1”. Actually most of the mod “boom” rF1 had was due to conversion of other companies work, for similar sims.

Now, there’s no “that similar” sim to easily copy of.

      • And only a handful of rF1 mods were actually top notch on all areas.

    • To me it seems the rf2 business model has failed. People who bought the game when it came out as beta tried it and either kept playing or left. And when they want to come back they need to pay again to access online. That probably raises the bar quite a lot for people to get back into rf2 and give it another chance.

The reason the business model has failed is not that people are not renewing their online payments but the fact that when they do not renew it starts a spiraling effect where there are less and less players which means less and less new players. This then means the good quality killers mods do not get made for rf2 which also doesn’t help getting people interested about it.

I’m one of those people myself who bought it when it came out and then left and it doesn’t really make sense to pay for the game again just to get to drive online (and to see if there are even people online). And offline sims are literally worthless to me. Driving against ai is not an interesting proposition at all… And having to pay again to be able to play online seems really weak value for money proposition…

      • First, you don’t have to pay to just inform yourself about status of online experience in rF2. Second, you still can try every new released build and find if is it up to your expectation or not. And third, 10 bucks per year is really not big for online experience if you find it acceptable. Price model is not close to a reason why online experience in rF2 is not so successful right now. And ISI’s marketing model is best simply by the fact, they accept refunds. So price is hardly a reason for problems rF2 is facing right now.

      • I did not mean that the price was the issue. But more the fact that you need to pay at all. It could be 5€ or 1€ and the block would be almost as effective.

rFactor 2 is the best sim in my opinion, with the most features and stuff being simulated and the best FFB. But what (in my opinion) cripples the possible success of it is the fact that the official content is just a wild mix of single cars and tracks which are not tied to each other.

Sure, ISI probably wants to get some “examples” for all kinds of car classes and track categories out there so that modders have something to compare their work to, but a lot of people will probably not buy the title (there is lifetime after all where you never need to renew anything!) or renew their subscription when there is not a full set of cars and tracks you can make a complete championship with.

I love the variety, but at the same time the announcement and release of content like this Gen6 car make me wonder: How much fun will this car bring us when there is only one proper (and official) track for this car? I am not a Nascar fan myself, but I would have been much more happier if ISI would deliver a full pack of tracks alongside this car so you have enough content to make an interesting championship. They don’t need a series’ licence, the cars and tracks alone are enough.

Going back a few years, I think I would have never picked up GTR and GTR² if they wouldn’t have featured a full series. It was a selling point, you could fire it up and have a full season in a league right from the start, and in the case of the FIA GT championship it was a very strong selling point. Looking at rFactor 2 now I can see why there are not so many servers runnning the official content only so everyone can join. We only have one GT1, one GT2, one GT3, one GT4, even from different years. The same goes for the tracks. Driving the same car/track combo will get boring after some time. While all of that is high quality content, it is not tied together. rFactor 2 needs a strong selling point in the shape of content from a real series, maybe without the series’ licence (way too expensive), but with all the tracks and cars from a specific year. And because rFactor 2 is THE platform for endurance racing, I’d like to see some kind of an ALMS or WEC like series. If they had this, I am sure rFactor 2 would have a lot more fans and customers. The Karts with the single track, the Quad with the single track, the Panoz Roadster… Sure, nice stuff and appreciated, but I fired all of that up just once because single combos can’t keep me interested, and especially not if they are not a good choice for a championship in a league (Panoz, Quad, not interested in the Karts myself as well…). People have to pay for the multiplayer or get the lifetime licence. And usually those who are driving online are the ones racing on the locked servers from leagues. In other words, they are interested in stuff suitable for a league. And so far there isn’t that much high quality content for that, let alone official stuff from ISI. And the low number of people interested in rFactor 2 ultimately leads to some modding teams deciding to go to another platform as well.

And after that rant let me point it out again: I think that rFactor 2 is the best sim out there, clearly even. But I can see why there are not as many people interested in it as it was the case with rFactor 1 (back then there wasn’t any good competition besides the SimBin titles) or is the case with current competitors. I want it to succeed because it offers me the best experience. But with single content additions which are not tied to each other ISI is losing out on potential customers who would buy it if it had a full series I believe. And again, it’s just my opinion.

    • Regarding your first paragraph. Although it’s true, unfortunately it happens with all sims today.

Unless when a developer closes a deal with a specific series, such as DTM (Simbin) or Stock Car (Reiza), it will always end up being a bunch of not related cars.

What I think that maybe would be nice in the future, is if some devs do some “full-series” DLCs. Even if payed.

      • “What I think that maybe would be nice in the future, is if some devs do some “full-series” DLCs. Even if payed.”

        Agreed 200%

      • Yeah, I think the same actually. Make a poll for the community what kind of package they prefer, get the licence and sell it as DLC. I actually like the idea.

When actually thinking about how much support ISI puts into rF2, the lifetime licence is a bargain. I really wonder if you can support a title for many years to come when it’s that cheap. You have to keep in mind we’re not talking about millions and millions of sold licences of rF2 like the Call of Duty series or something.

I would pay for carefully selected and officially licenced content, if it offers me a “complete package”, that’s for sure. Just like I’ll buy the Nordschleife addon for AC. I think a big part of the simracing community is mature enough to see and understand that those licencing deals became more and more expensive and exclusive over the last couple of years. So there is an audience willing to pay an appropriate amount of money for high quality and official content.

    • Yes, for me my turning point will allways be the fact that i can relate the sim content to an authentic counterpart…that’s why i always loved more the HE of mods than others, i like to see cars and tracks portraited as they are, and in total coerence with eachother, cars in theire natural elements…i love the variety, but if there isn’t some king of “line” to stick it together, i began to loose interest…of course if it comes in the shape of a oficial license been able to portraist a real series in the sim, all the better…or a “private” mod portraing a real series with accuracy….but with recent news of the FIA (and similar institutions) serving as hunting dogs for other interests, that will become a very distant scenario in the future…let’s hope i’m wrong, and companies/organizations/modders will find a magic formula

    • You have some good points, I can’t deny that, especialy in the current state that rF2 is in. But I see it in a bit more relaxed way. Lately ISI posted some screens of several new tracks (partly ovals), also kart tracks that will ship sooner or later into the game. Tim mentioned some time ago that they also have the possiblity to add a kart track to Indy. I think it is all more or less a matter of time and with a good mixture of 3rd party tracks (Nazareth and TMS for example) and official tracks you can get a good series allready for some of the cars. Sure, to drive a kart series is not really possible, but for me the variety offers a chance where other products don’t interest me tbh. Every developers is producing GT3 stuff these days, what I find rather boring after some time, though I pretty much enoy watching it. And it would be a mistake to say that you can’t have a GT3 league in rF2 allready.

From my POV there are some things that really need to be fixed, like the visual part of rain simulation, but other than that I think that rF2 is a pretty good package allready that will get even more interesting in the future. I am not in a rush 😉

    • One of the best posts around here for a long time. You nailed it, I think, in that rF2 seems to provide tid-bits of a race series, rather than a smorgasbord.

My understanding is that the woeful ETX Racing doesn’t have an exclusive Nascar license, but presumably we are talking big money for ISI to go down that route, or maybe do the fictitious name thing a la GSCE. I agree, it would be awesome if they would do so – multiplayer shenanigans in iRacing is just not my thing.

Actually this whole issue of one or two cars from a particular series is an epidemic with today’s sims, presumably a reflection of the cost of licensing the whole shebang?

That’s why I have a lot of praise for DTM Experience, which may not be perfect even though it has all the elements in the package.

The worst example of this is the DW12 in rF2. There is such limited community support in terms of a full Indycar paint set. These are trickling out at No Grip, and I would have thought we’d have seen a complete set long before now, but there seems such limited modding support for this title.

  • Amc Mcm

Holy calonies! Looks pretty cool. Tough to compete with iRacing since stock cars are their well-developed speciality. It will be nice I’m sure. Look forward to try it out. Now we need a nice set of ovals…

  • There are like no oval tracks in rf2 apart from Indy

    • Well there have been a number of new tracks being tested on the ISI test servers, so something is in store for these i think.

I’m hoping that iRacing’s NSM will be out by the time these are out and then when we try it we go “Wow. These are almost exactly the same”, then we find out that ISI and iRacing merged to make ISiRacing and that David Kaemmer and Tim Wheatley are now adopting a child to teach all their ways to hopefully create the GREATEST SIM EVER in 40 years. >_>

  • You don’t need ONLY oval tracks to race these beasts. If you know anything about Nascar….:D

I can’t wait to drive at Watkins Glen in one.
